Windows Mobile 6.1, the New Look!!!

Wah.. wah.. sepertinya UI sudah menjadi ajang tersendiri untuk perang menggaet pengguna setia gadget terutama pocketPC. Bayangkan, setelah muncul iPhone yang dengan UI yang fenomenal sehingga oleh majalah TIME dinobatkan menjadi The Best Inventions of The Year 2007

Microsoft yang telah meluncurkan os terbaru saat itu yaitu Windows Mobile 6 Professional dan Standard sepertinya langsung kalah telak dan sepertinya tergelitik untuk membalas apa yang telah dilakukan Apple terhadap Microsoft setelah Mac vs Windows.

Untuk merealisasikan perang UI, Microsoft akan melempar versi baru yaitu WM 6.1 tahun 2008 yang gosipnya sih bulan Februari sudah siap. Apakah yang akan ditawarkan di WM 6.1? ternyata cukup banyak, diantaranya :

  • Copy / Paste (finally!)
  • Domain Enroll in Settings (Enrolling in a domain will connect your device with company resources.)
  • New home screen (pan left and right to check out missed calls, notifications like email, sms, etc.)
  • Change Master Security Code
  • Added text input settings
  • Recent Programs when pressing Start menu
  • Threaded SMS!
  • When you compose an email, or SMS, and start typing the name of the contact in the “To:” field, the contact names finally pop up like Windows Mobile Professional!
  • Internet Explorer now lets you define a homepage, and also zoom in and out using a nice and clean interface
  • Task Manager now shows CPU usage as a whole, and also lists it by process
  • Internet Explorer offers 6 zoom modes and copy / paste functionality
  • IE also uses a new font, which looks worlds better
  • ActiveSync will now try to automatically configure your Exchange settings once you enter an email address
  • Wi-Fi indicator in the status bar, just as in Windows Mobile Professional
  • New “Vista” home screen and theme

Ternyata tidak cukup sampai di situ, Microsoft telah berancang-ancang untuk melanjutkan di versi selanjutnya di tahun 2009 yaitu versi Windows Mobile 7 dengan lebih banyak improvement termasuk dukungan terhadap multi touch!!!

Windows Mobile 7 will use touch gestures, similar to how the iPhone does. You will be able to flick through lists, pan, swipe sideway, draw on the screen. A lot of emphasis has been put on making navigation easier and doing away with scrollbars, including a new scroll handle that allows for multiple ways of finding items extremely fast.

Windows Mobile 7 will use motion gestures, something the iPhone does not. It will not use an intricate and complicated series of gyroscopes and accelerometers. Instead, it will use the camera on the phone to detect motions and create appropriate actions. You will be able to shake, twist and otherwise manipulate the phone and get things done. The phone will be able to perform actions when placed face down on a surface, and it will know when it is in your pocket or bag.
